Free School Meals

Free School Meals are available for families who are in receipt of a qualifying benefit. The County Council asks all families who are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) to put in an application because even if you do not want the free meal your school will get valuable additional funding, called the Pupil Premium.

Who is eligible for Free School Meals and Pupil Premium?

All children who are at school; and were under 19 at the start of the academic year; and are
claiming or have parents who are claiming:
  • Income support; or
  • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance; or
  • Income Related Employment and Support Allowance (this benefit was introduced from 27 October 2008); or
  • Child Tax Credit, but who are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and whose annual income (as assessed by HM Revenue & Customs) does not exceed £16,190; or

Do I need to apply if my children are in EYFS/KS1 and automatically get Universal Infant Free School Meals?

If you are eligible for means-tested Free School Meals but have children in Early Years or Key Stage 1 the school will benefit if you make an application even though your children will already be receiving a free meal. Therefore, we would ask that all eligible families apply as soon as possible after their children begin school.
